It's About the Journey
From the moment I heard the words, "You have cancer", my life changed forever. Some of those changes were hard to endure, but all of them have shaped and molded me into the person I am today. Cancer is a journey. At time, a very hard one, but I have found that it is in those moments of despair and anguish that I have found my greatest strength. This book recounts my personal journey with breast cancer; a journey for which I am grateful. It is but a portion of the great journey that is my life and it showed me that I can do really hard things as long as I take them One Day at a Time.
Desirae Ogden grew up the oldest of 5 children in the blazing heat of Southern Utah. After high school and some college experience she met and married Mark Ogden and they are the parents of four children. She is author of One Day at a Time My Journey with Cancer and she also blogs at www.desiraeogden.com. Desirae has owned and operated her own home-based preschool for more than a dozen years. When she is not in her car transporting children from one activity to the next, she enjoys playing the piano, blogging, speaking about her life’s experiences, and feeding her crafting disease. She lives in Murray, Utah.

At first glance, you'd think that Mrs. Ogden's account and the diary I kept of my wife's episode would be a lot alike. Both women had potentially lethal cancer left untreated; they had the same oncologist; both accounts spun out chronologically with daily or near daily entries. Both resulted in book-length documents, mine distributed only to family. From that point on, the accounts could not be more different: Diedre is a young mother; Lynn was a 70 year-old grandmother. Diedre, after her protracted course of treatment now is disease free. Lynn had a year and a half of good quality survival but succumbed to cerebral metastases 6 days short of our 38th wedding anniversary. For both of our families, and all of those stricken by these terrible afflictions, it's always "one day at a time'.
Diedre and her family are devout Mormons. Their faith has been and continues to be a resource that brings them strength and optimism in their darkest hours. Their faith clearly has sustained them and complemented what medical science has to offer.
Lynn and I were unchurched for most of our marriage (although we both were raised in strong religious traditions). We both had scientific-medical backgrounds. Our resource has been science and research. We prayed, but in the tradition of deists, expecting no direct intervention on our behalf. That said, our medical background paved the way for Lynn's passage. We spent the morning together on the day of her death talking about our great love for each other, our grandchildren and our lives together. We planned Lynn's memorial services. The ICU staff respected my judgement as a physician and let us call the timing and doses of the drugs that had been ordered for her. Lynn died late in the afternoon, without pain or distress, in my arms.
Two different accounts. Two different outcomes. Two different world views. Different skill sets. I am so happy for Diedre and her family and hope they have many, many decades of joy together. Don't let a day go by that you don't show your love to those close to you. All else is the "small stuff".

One Day at a Time My Journey with Cancer eBook Desirae Ogden Reviews
I enjoyed reading your story. You truly are a Daughter of our Father in Heaven and it is clear he has a plan for you. Being young you have been a example of what one can endure with cancer and still staying strong with a young family to raise. Knowing you have a loving partner by your side was a blessing. The waiting from one time to another to see what's next, that's the hard part. You are a strong person and will be around for years to come.
I absolutely loved this book! The way the author shares her story really touched my heart. Her writing style flowed so easily making me anxious to keep reading to find out what happened next. I love how she she shared so much with us and really gave the reader a glimpse into the life of a young mom with cancer. I am left feeling truly inspired by her spirit, positive attitude and amazing example. I would recommend this book as a must read for everyone!
I loved loved this book. I have friends that are in the fight with cancer, and this book answered so many questions for me. I learned so much about the process, and hope to be a better supporter. The author shares the most difficult things that cancer brings. With all the bad, the author kept a sense of humor. I still laugh thinking of her one soldier eyebrow. Her details of the everyday challenges made my heart ache, but she kept faith, and she inspires me. This book was a reminder that we can do hard things.
I cried and smiled my way through this book. I'm so glad I understand a bit more about how someone feels and what they face during cancer treatment. Desirae's path was not an easy, straightforward treatment. But her humor, determination and perspective are things that I'm so glad I've gotten a taste of from reading her beautiful account. I enjoyed her "voice" in this book, it's like a friend is talking to you and telling her story. She is a supermom/hero and a brave, real, lovely author.
I would recommend it for anyone who has gone thru cancer or know someone who had. She gives great insight
I thought this was a great book. Very open and honest with some humor to keep things light.
This book is great for those who like stories of inspiration whether it’s about cancer or any other challenging time. It was engaging and heartfelt. I heard her talk on a podcast and thought she had a story worth reading. I wasn’t disappointed!
